ABSTRACT

In some jobs fiddles are carried on with the collusion of management; yet in others fiddlers are ruthlessly and swiftly punished. In some fiddling is organised and carried out by individuals in isolation from their workmates; in others it requires the co-operation of a group. Occupations can, in fact, be treated as cultures and the way a job is actually structured on the ground’ can be assessed by using the grid and group dimensions. Strong-grid jobs, for instance, are those which are similar in their structure to the caste cultures of India. Weak-grid jobs, on the other hand, are those with an overall absence of constraints and where this is so is found the freedom for people to transact with a wide range of others. Vulture jobs include selling jobs, particularly those that allow people to move around and where competitive flair permits the relaxation of rules. Vultures include sales representatives, travellers and roundsmen of various kinds.
