ABSTRACT

This chapter provides a review of the physiological demands that comprise the game of basketball, along with the physical attributes that players need in order to be successful. Specific reference is made to playing position, and the need for differing anthropometric profiles and fitness levels that help to determine players on court roles.

The principles of physiological testing are identified in order to provide coaches with information regarding the fitness status of players, which will allow for the development of training programmes specific to the requirements of the game.
