ABSTRACT

The chapter acknowledges sport psychology as major sport science discipline and recognizes that sport performance is achieved as a result of an interdisciplinary approach. Performance in basketball is facilitated by psychological skills integrated in general preparation. Information provided is aimed to clarify topics around sport psychology practitioner accreditation, psychological skill training approach in basketball, mental qualities and mental skill tools used to enhance performance. Goal setting, self-talk and imagery are briefly discussed from a theoretical perspective. Relevant case studies and practical examples are used to help the reader transfer the theory into practice. The final part of the chapter explores the structure and effectiveness of pre-performance routines for shooting free throws.
