ABSTRACT

As is established in the preceding discussion, Russian centre-region relations are still in the making. In this chapter, we will summarise the main findings of the previous chapters, before addressing the various hypotheses put forth in Chapter 1 about the influence of various common traits of Northwestern Russia (i.e. dependence on natural resources, a heavy military presence, general peripheral traits and the status as a gateway region) on the development of centre-region relations. Finally, we will offer some tentative conclusions on the nature and further development of the relationship between the Northwest Russian federal subjects and the federal centre.
