ABSTRACT

The article has a gender approach to multimedia use. The case is about why some girls use multimedia and why they actually like it. The computer-enthusiastic girls learn their skills mainly at home by using the trial-and-error strategy. The role of formal education is taken over by home learning. Different from other girls, the computer-fascinated girls attach a fun meaning to the computer. They do not look at the computer as a tool but more as a ‘play pal’ they can have fun with. This gives us some indication about the process of diversification of the meaning of multimedia, and of appropriation processes at school and at home. Last but not least, we learn about ways to create an interest for multimedia among girls.
