ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the role of geographical information technology as a means of providing timely data and information in conducting, structuring and controlling coastal zone management developments and networks. It outlines the structure of a database aiming at the monitoring and the estimation of land use changes in the Hellenic coastal area. The need for a specific management system to address the unique problems of the coastal zone arises from the need to integrate the management processes of the land and sea. A successful coastal zone management system must be based on a decision making process capable of integrating all relevant issues and interests. One piece of legislation that might provide a platform for the development of a partnership approach to coastal zone management across Europe is the European Union Habitats Directive on the conservation of flora and fauna and their habitats.
