ABSTRACT

The growth of collaborative governance and management has been accompanied by a steady output of research—both theoretical and more practical and policy based. The quest for theory generation and explanation will ultimately be beneficial for the policy community in tackling their everyday management challenges. Perhaps most of all, and reflecting H. Sullivan’s assertion that collaboration is the new normal, is that government, politicians and policy makers create the right authorizing environment for collaboration. However, key themes can certainly be detected—factors and determinants that are critical in shaping the course of collaboration and boundary management. J. Fountain emphasises the enormity of the challenge of working across boundaries to design and delivery effective collaboration in the following way: Management advice and research on collaborative governance, networked governance, joined-up governance, and more abound.
