ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses Vulnerability and impact assessment of climate change on East African wildlife tourism. The tourism industry is a major contributor to global economic development, especially as an employer in developing economies and regions where tourism commonly represents the main source of national foreign incomes. In 2014 the tourism industry directly supported 206,500 jobs in Kenya. Tourism is a highly climate-sensitive industry. Climate change significantly affects the tourism industry, most importantly due to its effect on the attractiveness of tourism destinations and tourist flows. According to Lusweti climate change affects biodiversity including wild-life. In East Africa, climate change comes with devastating impacts on the economies. Climate change is affecting the Maasai Mara ecosystem. Tourism businesses and the entire tourism industry in Maasai Mara greatly depend on the migration of the wildebeest. Over 60 per cent of the hotels and lodges in Maasai Mara have been negatively impacted by climate change.
