ABSTRACT

The more projects and programmes an organization is performing, the more the need for portfolio management is becoming obvious. It's the responsibility of top managers to initiate a project for introducing portfolio management. The benefits of introducing portfolio management are certainly very individual and depend on the organization, the leadership and the people affected by the portfolio. Introducing portfolio management in organizations is an intervention into a social system, which requires a systematic approach in order to be performed successfully. An organization should not 'reinvent the wheel' when introducing portfolio management. Portfolio management is instrumental for achieving transparency concerning the status of all projects and programmes. The organization was mainly opportunity driven and the top management did not care much about systematic portfolio management. A programme and portfolio management consultant was asked to propose a way forward, together with the manager responsible for project management and the project management office.
