ABSTRACT
This introduction presents an overview of key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book focuses on key concepts in the analysis of the various welfare states and also key aspects in relation to the understanding and interpretation of the welfare state. It also focuses on typologies and methods. The book looks into central policy areas. It also looks into new risk and management of crime, and further whether a supranational institution such as the European Union may have an impact on the welfare state in a nation. The book discusses the future of the welfare state in the light of the changes in the labour market, the emergence of populist movements and new divisions in societies. It deals with what welfare is and Titmuss' understanding of the classical way to welfare. The welfare state is not just a new buzzword, but is a seemingly important institution that has been gradually developed, and has changed over time.
