ABSTRACT

This chapter begins by connecting the exploitation of the working class and nature in political economic thought, and then describes working class responses to ecological destruction under capitalism. This is followed by a discussion of the linkages between workers and environmental movements from a political economic perspective. It then considers working class concerns with exposure to environmental toxins in workplaces and communities, and how these may develop into contested illness struggles. A brief discussion of the political economic analysis of environmental conflicts and struggles faced by the working class and poor in less-developed nations is also included.
