ABSTRACT

The Arts Immersion middle school theater workshop had met seven out of the 12 designated times when the students decided to create scenes based on their school day. This chapter discusses the structure of their day, including morning classes, lunch, and after school activities. The theater games serve to establish a dialogue, a vernacular that heightens their sense of concentration while helping to unfurl the imagination. In addition to the games aiding skill development, theater exercises also inspire a sense of a shared language among the players that will aid their devising work. The students who attend the enrichment program are encouraged to think critically as well as analyze and synthesize material. In the enrichment program, theater offered opportunities for students to become more in tune with their intuition and imagination. While devising theater, middle-school students practice resolving issues, collaboratively reworking and fine-tuning solutions to problems.
