ABSTRACT

This chapter describes similarities and differences between family life education (FLE), family therapy and family case management (FCM). FLE programs may take a variety of forms but there are often common elements of design and practice. A major component of FLE programs assumes that FLEs will want to stay current on the research base relevant to the program. Once the planning and assessments for the program are done, it is probably time to implement the program. The welcome session is a time that allows the participants of the FLE program to get familiar with it. Sexuality educators working in the context of FLE will most likely have an understanding of existing approaches to sexuality education, such as abstinence-only, abstinence-based, and comprehensive sexuality education programs. The NCFR Family Life Educators code of ethics includes several ethical principles that are germane to an FLE program for empowering parents to talk with and to respond to their young children's sexuality development.
