ABSTRACT

Without logistics, there can be no air power. Air logistics comprises the ability to plan, lead, and execute movement and maintenance of air forces. The topic extends beyond support and supply management to cover air force protection, basing, and engineering. Despite increased operational complexity, the range of disciplines that logistics now encompasses, and advances in the science of logistics, the fundamental requirement of military logistics to enable and sustain military forces has remained unchanged. However, the nature of air power and its reliance on aircraft and ‘hi-tech’ equipment for readiness and responsiveness impose important and special demands. This chapter explores various aspects of modern-day logistics, including infrastructure, maintenance and repair, fleet management, spares and inventory. The author emphasises the importance of people, their competencies and their dedication to service, and considers some of the future challenges of effective logistics support to air forces in the light of changing threats and new technology. The author concludes that to ensure that logistics support is in place, when and where needed, all parties must be involved from the earliest stages of planning: proactive engagement between operators and air-specialised logisticians is the key to successful campaigns.
