ABSTRACT

This chapter examines two environmental approaches to crime prevention and their impact on property crime. The approaches discussed are Situational Crime Prevention (SCP) and Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED). The chapter starts with the theoretical framework for the approaches, including Routine Activity Theory and Rational Choice Theory, then moves on to explain what SCP is and how it can be implemented before critiquing its effectiveness. Key concepts for CPTED, such as defensible space, are outlined and examples of how this can be implemented are discussed. A focus is placed throughout on how SCP and CPTED are utilised to tackle property crime.
