ABSTRACT

This chapter explores the periphery of public relations practice. It is concerned with neglected aspects of organizational life which, although understated and underestimated, can have a significant impact on how people work together effectively. The chapter makes no claims towards objectivity or impartiality. It instead draws upon my own experiences as a practitioner to promote alternative ways of understanding how things get done in public relations teams. The chapter's peripheral and candid personal orientation is designed as a counterpoint to more mainstream narratives of public relations practice. For example, the sector is awash with illustrations of best practice as leading figures from the industry talk about the factors which underpin their success. As an exploration of public relations periphery, the chapter looks sideways and considers what can happen at the margins of working life. The aim in doing so is to encourage a heightened appreciation for the oblique and understated.
