ABSTRACT

The chapter discusses a workshop in the tradition of “visiting artists” in schools. Small Composers is a pedagogical platform that has been developed by a Danish ensemble for contemporary music through collaboration with Danish primary schools. A class teacher, a professional composer, a professional musician, and twenty-four pupils in a third-grade school class engages in composition, and a particular focus is put on how they contribute to the creation of musical meaning. A successful collaboration depends on the participants’ mutual commitment to the creative musical community of practice and on their confidence in the value of their musical contribution.
