ABSTRACT

Cantonese opera is a representative Chinese opera genre popular in Hong Kong. Teaching Cantonese opera in Hong Kong schools has been encouraged to promote Chinese and local culture. This chapter reports a teacher–artist collaborative teaching project, which has identified the roles of the teacher and the artist in the classroom and four kinds of collaboration modes undertaken by the participants. Although a certain level of success has been observed in the study, challenges of teacher–artist collaboration exist. The author raised a number of concerns observed from the study with recommendations for improvement.
