ABSTRACT

This chapter outlines the question of Gdansk and naval operations in the Baltic Sea during the wars of 1497–1525. Lot of ships and cargoes were captured by Danish privateers as a result of the embargo against Sweden. Gotland was very important for their activity, as it was a natural base for naval operations against Sweden. Burghers of Gdansk sometimes became victims of the sea robbery, but they used to arm privateering vessels too. In the second half of the fifteenth century, Gdansk vessels were attacked by sea robbers of Ivar Axelsson. Danish privateer activity probably had a substantial influence on Gdansk's decision to abandon the policy of neutrality and to engage in war against Christian II in 1522. The expedition of 1522 or the privateering operations in the early sixteenth century are parts of the maritime history of Gdansk and Poland that need further research.
