ABSTRACT

After-school institutions have unique opportunities to work with subjects concerning mental health, wellbeing and resilience. In this chapter, we will follow three examples of such work: the settings are a pedagogically managed playground, and an after-school and youth club for children and teenagers between the ages of 11 and 18. The playground and the club are located in a disadvantaged residential area. The project described in this chapter was examined by research throughout three years. The results from this evaluation showed that the activities had contributed to the prevention of high-risk conflicts (90 per cent reduction) and sick leave (50 per cent reduction).
