ABSTRACT

Christian responses to the state and civil society have historically oscillated between an emphasis on the continuity of the creation with the Creator and a stress on their differences. Drawing on the work of David Fergusson and John Milbank, Pemberton concludes that future investigations in the field of theology and civil society will need to be able to account for both goals the state and civil society share in common (theologically, God’s rule over all spheres), and the rationale for their necessary or tactical disassociation (the world’s freedom and its difference from God).
