ABSTRACT

This chapter is concerned with solution-focused practice. Suki Desai’s account shows how focusing on strengths and resilience factors can provide a strong platform for promoting empowerment. This approach has much to commend it and is a very worthwhile method to be able to draw upon, because it enables people who are experiencing difficulties to see past those difficulties and to have a more balanced view of the situation. That more balanced view incorporates an understanding of the strengths that can be drawn upon and how these contribute to the nurturing of resilience – the ability to “bounce back” from adversity. By making the primary focus one on solutions, rather than problems, a more positive and empowering approach can be developed.
