ABSTRACT

Conflict is a common feature of social work practice. It is in recognition of this that this chapter covers the topic of mediation. This method, clearly explained by Wing Hong Chui, provides a structured approach to conflict resolution. With its high success rate it is certainly an approach that is worth exploring. Various techniques for addressing conflict are offered, including the use of a restorative justice model. The significance of conflict is often not appreciated, but this chapter not only highlights the significance of conflict, but also offers guidance on how to manage it when it does arise. An understanding of mediation as part of the social work methods repertoire will help practitioners to have a strong basis to make a positive difference.
