ABSTRACT

In this chapter Neil Thompson explores the relationship between theory and practice. He challenges the traditional notion of “applying theory to practice” and proposes in its place a process of “theorizing practice.” This involves replacing the idea of beginning with theory and trying to fit it into real practice situations with one of beginning with practice and drawing on our professional knowledge base as appropriate to the specific circumstances. This is presented in the context of critically reflective practice and is consistent with Schőn’s notion of ‘a reflective conversation with the situation'. Thompson emphasizes the importance of drawing on our professional knowledge base in order to make sure that our practice is informed practice.
