ABSTRACT
This chapter provides an overview of the structure of the functional elements within the noun phrase of North American languages, using examples from across the continent. Gender, number, classifiers, possession, determiners, demonstratives, and case marking are all discussed. North American languages show great variability in the presence/absence and expression of these categories, and examples of variations on these categories are provided.
