ABSTRACT

The chapter explores the activism of intersectionality and empowerment through the narratives of female community radio volunteers in the north of the UK. Its starting point is Freire’s notion that the dominant, unjust social order ‘creates a culture of silence where oppressed people are silenced, alienated and a mere object of the director society’ (1972: 16). It positions media and cultural spaces as powerful sites of dialogue and social action where women confront the orthodoxy of white, male-dominated media through dialogue, collective support, conscientisation and broadcasting their voices on live radio.
