ABSTRACT

The ability to create a spiritually competent case conceptualization is paramount to effective treatment of spiritual clients. This competency requires the counselor to integrate information gathered through assessment within a spiritual developmental model. This chapter will focus on the spiritual and religious issues, as well as strengths, with which clients frequently present. The authors integrate spiritual struggles, development, and assessment into a specific case conceptualization model for counselors to use as a basis for determining appropriate treatment and intervention. Related DSM-5 diagnoses and integration of religion and spirituality within the psychiatric tradition is examined. A concrete example is presented, using a standardized case study from previous chapters.
