ABSTRACT

Adler conceptualized the idea of life tasks as universal issues each individual needs to address in order to maximize their psychological wellness (Sweeney, 2009). Spirituality is an essential life task for effective living, and represents one’s interaction with the existential issues of meaning and purpose. This life task is central to wellness, and as such, relates to considerations for a counselor’s interactions with all other life tasks, and clients’ style of life dynamics (Sweeney, 2009). This chapter focuses on spirituality as a life task and as central to holistic wellness. The authors integrate the four stages of Adlerian counseling into client spiritual development. Based on this conceptualization, interventions are described and integration into one of the previously described case examples is presented.
