ABSTRACT

Recent immigrants are identified by the authors as those who are foreign born and their dependent children. There are substantial numbers of such migrants in some large nations and large proportion of the population in certain small nations. The questions of how to deal with these divisions within French society are complex and concern education at several levels. One of the important goals is to ensure that the schools now attended by the migrants are as well taught as possible, and the decision was made to ensure that the teachers would be, or would include, members of the minority communities. The education in state schools is intended for Islamic Arabs, and early drop-outs are still high. Private schools offer educationally conscious families an international standard of technical competence. Visitors who accept national, religious and linguistic objectives may attend schools free of charge, but their right to other forms of education is subject to control by the state.
