ABSTRACT

This chapter presents the forms and norms of journalism as a specifically urban affair, or situation. It focuses less on specifying what counts as “urban” journalism or not, but rather how the urban appears: (1) through journalism’s technical, industrial, architectural, and organizational forms; and (2) through journalistic norms—that is, its various ways of observing, imagining, and inhabiting the urban. The chapter’s discussion is organized around three conceptual lenses: journalism as a culture of public circulation; journalistic placemaking; and journalistic field spaces.
