ABSTRACT

Canada is historically a pioneering state with all the legacy that that brings, and there is much to be learnt from their recent reflections and developments. Canada offers a useful comparator for English legal education. The impact of global as well as local economic changes, austerity and recession has transformed the Canadian commercial legal market and the profession. The Canadian Bar Association is the body that represents lawyers across Canada: the equivalent of the English Law Society or Bar Council. Pro Bono Students Canada is an umbrella organisation that provides pro bono opportunities for all law students in Canada and enables law schools to meet some of their regulatory requirements. In 2014 the Law Society of Upper Canada introduced the Legal Practice Program (LPP) as an alternative to the articling route. This chapter outlines the indicators to show that Canadian legal education is in a period of rapid change. Canadian law historically takes its lead from common law, English, inheritance.
