ABSTRACT

Foreign language education (FLE) in Vietnam is more than a pedagogical issue. The teaching of foreign languages is a political, social, and cultural activity, and decisions over which methods to use can only be answered with reference to the local socio-political and cultural environment. This chapter aims to provide insights into the situation of Vietnamese FLE considering globalisation. The chapter focuses on the influence of globalisation on Vietnamese society since 1986, when Doi Moi, the policy of innovation, was adopted. Recent changes in FLE, especially English as Foreign Language teaching and learning, will be discussed with an emphasis on the role of English in formal and informal education systems.
