ABSTRACT

The defeat of the January Uprising in 1863, besides the significant consequences for the Kingdom of Poland, plays a crucial role in the formation of the largest artistic colony of Polish painters and sculptors in Munich- "Athens on the River Isar". In 1871, the art of the young man, now a student of Professor Carl von Piloty, is still characterised by that particular weight of emotional involvement and humbleness though, it lacks the patriotic function. He focuses on foreign landscapes, lavish interiors, and literary figures such as the characters created by William Shakespeare. According to Waclaw Jaroszynski, Czachórski was fascinated with the dramas of William Shakespeare and not only because of his academic assignments. Czachórski shows his fascination with Shakespeare's works and also a unique skill to conjure up 'theatre within theatre' in a painting by depicting Hamlet Receiving the Players. Czachórski initiates his work on the painting with close analysis of Shakespeare's tragedy.
