ABSTRACT

This chapter analyzes the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats to the implementation of the Paris Agreement in the Latin American region. The role that indigenous peoples can play in the form of strength is fortified by the following presence at 21st Conference of the Parties (COP 21): On December 6, a worldwide coalition of indigenous groups paddled a symbolic canoe up the Seine into central Paris. The Paris Agreement is considered a triumph for the Latin American region, perhaps because this region is considered one of the most vulnerable to bearing the brunt of climate change. The adoption of the Paris Agreement at the largely momentous event of COP 21 recognizes that climate change represents an urgent and potentially irreversible threat to human societies and the planet. The Latin American region is rich in fossil fuel and home to the Amazon and its indigenous peoples.
