ABSTRACT

Okinlab is a laboratory for architecture and design, specializing in digital "freeform design engineering" and digital "design to production" processes. The company works at the interface between architecture, product design, computer science, and research, where the use of the latest digital design and production methods plays a central role. Okinlab had recently developed "form.bar," a 3D web application where users can customize pieces of furniture by deforming their shape through the manipulation of some geometrical points on the outer lines of the furniture. Form.bar has an algorithm that guarantees that the modeled furniture is producible and statically stable. The software transmits the data to the carpenter located closest to the customer. Customers receive the furniture in the form of plug-in systems of wooden plates, which they can assemble on their own. The company produce the furniture on demand with a network of carpenters. Automated generation of the production data including a nested cutting plan for computer numerically controlled mills.
