ABSTRACT

This chapter describes sport science which specifically refers to the planning and use of training variables and performance assessment data in an effort to optimise the recovery-adaptation process. An athlete's training age is a major consideration for jump testing and data interpretation/application. The fitness-fatigue paradigm involves the manipulation of two generalised after-effects from training stress; fitness and fatigue. An athlete's preparedness equals the difference between fitness and fatigue. Preparedness is essentially the potential of an athlete to perform well. Athlete monitoring can provide insight into perplexing process and help the coach steer the ship more confidently. Researchers may be useful for comparison studies investigating volume load (VL) from different training interventions but is probably unnecessary for most athlete-monitoring or research studies. An understanding of the relationship between strength and power is vital as it has important implications in regard to the training process.
