ABSTRACT

This chapter aims to help the reader:

appreciate the importance of paying attention to the diversity of coachees in terms of their age, ability, gender, race, religion, belief, and sexual orientation;

understand the complexity of diversity in coaching;

understand the psychology of self and intersectionality for diversity coaching practice; and

know how to develop the fundamental skills as a foundation for more complex skills in diversity coaching.

First, it reviews the recent emerging crises of equality across the diverse sections of society reported in the media and discusses their implications for coaching for diversity. Section 2 describes the key themes, theory, and basic concepts of coaching for diversity. The key themes and concepts will be further expanded in Section 3 to illustrate how the theory can be applied into practice with a case study on intersectionality. Finally, a summary will be provided at the end of this chapter with a few challenging questions as part of your coaching psychology toolkit for discussion, reflection, and peer supervision on coaching practice.
