ABSTRACT

This chapter introduces the solution-focused, behavioural, and cognitive behavioural approaches in coaching. These approaches are widely used and well-evidenced within coaching psychology. All are adapted from a therapeutic context. All offer useful and effective ways of changing behaviour in a coaching context. In this chapter, you will explore each approach and consider the overlap between them. You will also be invited to have a go at using techniques for yourself and reflect on the possible limitations of each approach.

The chapter covers:

the main theories, concepts, and models used in solution-focused coaching, behavioural coaching, and cognitive behavioural coaching approaches;

example techniques to illustrate how these theories, concepts, and models relate to the practice of coaching; and

examples of techniques used in coaching practices.
