ABSTRACT

This chapter describes how stress and related factors impinge on the work experience of older workers, what role stress plays in the transition from the workforce, and how withdrawal from the workforce affects stress and related feelings. The general picture provided by the sample of 7,000 older workers and the panel of 416 retirees is a positive one. Only a minority of older workers found their work and workplace to be highly stressful. The majority enjoyed their work and their workplace, enjoyed the people, and felt appreciated. However, a significant minority did feel that, in general, older workers were not appreciated in their workplace. Despite this, and despite the uncertainty and change produced by economic restructuring and opposing pressures to continue work, these workers did not appear to experience their work as highly stressful or particularly uncomfortable.
