ABSTRACT

In this chapter, the author describes aspects of the ongoing collaboration between North American women and Guatemalan Indian women from the author perspective as one of the North American women participants. Not surprisingly, the interview strategy has been modified in collaboration with Guatemalan participants to include a range of interactions and conversations that are broader in scope than the original questions. The understanding of Guatemalan Indian women’s experiences that emerges from this project is and will always be provisional. It draws its energy and forcefulness from the collaboration of a small number of Guatemalan Indian women who are refugees in Mexico and an even smaller number of North American researchers who are committed to continuing involvement in solidarity with the people of Guatemala. The perspectives that emerge are particularly rich because they benefit from self-consciously collaborative effort to understand the self-understanding of Guatemalan Indian women and their continuing participation in struggles of their people.
