ABSTRACT

There are probably as many definitions of feminism as there are feminists. This chapter represents an attempt to determine whether feminists share a community of values distinct from nonfeminists and to categorize domains in which distinct value differences occur. Data for this chapter were, therefore, collected from twenty individuals who were identified as leaders in feminist activities within the American Psychological Association or the Association for Women in Psychology. Both groups, however, did include some representatives from the major areas of psychology; e.g., experimentalists, clinicians, etc. Since much information about the value structures of psychologists has been published recently, the chapter discusses feminist divergence from the psychological "norm" first. Contradictions within unexamined belief structures may also cause intrapersonal conflicts for feminists as well as others working within professional structures.
