ABSTRACT

This chapter presents a case study of the difficult process of accumulating visions as a critique of current realities. Stretching to imagine societies not stratified by social class, race, and gender; not segregated by sexuality or disability, but organized toward collectivity, cooperation and nurturance, a literature on feminist visions has recently proliferated. As the visions introduced in the bibliography identify social inequities, the limits of social science, research and theorizing are also exposed. Entertaining alternative visions of gender, race and class arrangements enables an examination of the dynamics which sustain current inequities. Feminist visions critique the distribution of social power, child-rearing responsibilities, material resources and interpersonal care in our society. Feminist visions, while sharpening a critique of current inequities, can propose strategies for confronting these inequities. A few feminist visions call for nurturant work to be depersonalized and bureaucraticized.
