ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the issues that were a blueprint for developing the model. The ability to visualize the process gave them some sense of direction in the midst of what felt like confusion. It allowed for a return to the first phase. The Circle of Influence is also meant to remind us that any loss occurs within a given relational context. The darker figures can also represent important relationships, which if lost would trigger strong reactions. The numbing effect of the protest phase eventually wears off and then the real pain of grief is felt. The first confrontation with meaning occurs when the bereaved become aware that a change has begun. The model can be used as a tool to empower the bereaved at a time when they are feeling the most powerless. The model has also been used as an educational tool to teach professionals and community volunteers.
