ABSTRACT

Neuroaesthetics is a young field of study, and it becomes youth to be imbued with a sense of curiosity and adventure. The fact that researchers with experimental, evolutionary, neuropsychological, and neuroimaging perspectives are studying neuroaesthetics as it relates to visual art, literature, music, and film underscores the point that we are a differentiated bunch. Neuroaesthetics is the study of the neural processes that underlie aesthetic behavior. The job of neuroaesthetics is to identify the aesthetic functions and to investigate their neurobiological causes. At its base, neuroaesthetics is a certain way of doing aesthetics, using neuroscience as a method of enquiry where other approaches to aesthetics have used philosophical analysis or strictly psychological models. As such, neuroaesthetics studies how aesthetic behavior is underpinned by brain processes. In other words, biological frameworks within aesthetics must be compatible with larger themes in the biological sciences for the sake of coherence as well as exchange of ideas.
