ABSTRACT

At the Tower of Brahma monastery in the Himalayas, there are three jewelled spikes with 64 different-sized golden disks. The monks at the monastery are patiently engaged in transferring the disks from one spike to another, subject to the following rules: only one disk at a time may be moved, and no disk may be placed on a smaller disk. The monks believe that when all the disks have been moved to the second spike, man’s work on earth will be done and that the world will come to an end. The monks take this work very seriously, but recently they have realized that the work is going very slowly.
