Identifying trusted persons within the community is of particular importance in dealing with the psychosocial needs of traumatized children and their families. For development of responses to traumatized children in supplement to the Geneva Conventions and their two additional Protocols as it relates to child victims of international and internal armed conflicts. Non-governmental organizations (NGOs) or international not-for-profit organizations established to respond to the needs of children in this century initially focused on the provision of basic needs: food, clothing, shelter, and education. NGO responses to children's needs were developed in cooperation with the United Nations' Children's Fund's (UNICEF) core mission of basic survival and development programs, which include immunizations, breastfeeding, water rehydration, and education. In the mid-1970s the International Catholic Child Bureau's Secretary-General, Canon Moorman, persuaded the United Nation's Secretary-General to designate an International Year of the Child (IYC). UNICEF was appointed the lead agency of the IYC.
