ABSTRACT

Women share the traumas caused by crime, armed conflict, natural disasters, bad health, and violations of human rights with all members of the human race. This chapter presents some of the areas where women are especially or uniquely vulnerable and where collaborative action among non-governmental and governmental agencies at the international level may help to prevent future traumatization and lead to appropriate attention to those who suffer traumatic stress. The international governmental community has responded to the evidence that women must be included at all levels in the efforts to improve the quality of life for individuals and society. There are many words in official documents, reports, and conventions that suggest remedies. The International Society for Traumatic Stress Studies has developed a program to assist those women who manage to find refuge in their embassies. This involves training embassy personnel, professionals, and volunteers in the process of reintegrating the women in their home country.
