ABSTRACT

This chapter explores only a few of the methodological tools being developed toward answering such questions. It examines artifact classes in the Kitchen group and derives from them a Kitchen Artifact Pattern. The chapter outlines the classes of artifacts by deriving simple ratios for pattern recognition. The Kitchen artifact group will be used as an example of the procedure to point the way toward the delineation of specifically sensitive pattern on the artifact class level. The remarkable similarity of the percentage for Ceramics is seen for the domestic sites, with the relationship between Ceramics and Wine Bottle classes indicating patterning within the grouped sites. The grouped sites can be compared by determining the mean for each artifact class to reveal Kitchen Artifact Class Patterns. The ceramic ratio is determined by subtracting the total for ceramics from the entire artifact count for the site, and dividing the ceramics by the resulting artifact total.
