ABSTRACT

Sweden’s political philosophy and structure was an important factor in determining its suitability for cross-cultural comparison. Sweden represents perhaps the most modern and successful example of the “social democratic state.” The Synanon Foundation, more than twenty years old, began as few members without a clear, systematic approach to rehabilitation. The therapeutic framework of Hassela is somewhat obscured because the organization denounced psychology as a “tool of bourgeoise suppression.” Rehabilitation is conceptualized as the rebuilding or renewing of past relationships. The Vallmotorp foundation was started by Lars Bremberg in 1973, and has in the past five years undergone several dramatic structural changes. Synanon stay ninety days, and of those who remain past ninety days, 90 per cent remain drug free. “Humor” is considered to be an important element of the Synanon Game. The problem facing the United States today, and other Western European countries is the increase of drug abuse both in the volume and range of drugs that are used.
