ABSTRACT

Nearly all philosophical thought in Hinduism up to today has been a development of ideas originating in fourteen quite short Sanskrit compositions, which are the earliest and principal Upanisads. The Upanisads represent various schools of thought and periods of time, and lack a uniform, systematic presentation. Dreamless sleep is true and literal transcendence, for the Self has transcended all physical and mental experience, including all body experience and all thought and feeling. Most dreams tend to force their presence upon the dreamer with entangling sense phenomena and situations that must be dealt with. Flying, like the related sensations of floating, levitation, and projection, though giving partial freedom from the dream environment, is often as much a hindrance as a help in attempts to completely eliminate dreaming, for it focuses attention on body awareness, which is then extremely difficult to eliminate.
